Electrical Systems Engineer/Controls Engineer - Overland Park, Kansas

Position Summary


 Work in a team setting to develop and refine the electrical system designs for Terminal Tractor vehicles

Job responsibilities:

  • Adapt and apply electrical system architecture to meet specific tractor development program requirements
  • Ensure that all components and system interaction of the electrical system meet or exceed their function requirements
  • Evaluate and report performance of electrical system, as well as, individual components subjectively and objectively
  • Resolve technical issues for performance and integration between system components
  • Authorize new and changed electronic component calibrations. Support and own other components as needed
  • Calculate and properly size electric drive motors for new and current tractors
  • Creates schematics
  • Develops automotive-type component selection, circuit protection and automotive/industrial wiring
  • Coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications
  • Evaluates engineering change requests and recommends design modifications to eliminate production and assembly difficulties
  • Familiarizes with the ISO 9001-2008 Requirements
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed or assigned
  • HMI Programming
  • Familiarity with CAN, J1939, and other vehicle communication protocols
  • Ability to program components (i.e., displays) using C/C++ or other applicable language(s)
  • Ability to design and implement telemetry systems to allow for remote diagnostics and fleet management and service

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong aptitude toward electrical, controls and mechatronic design
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of electrical, controls & mechatronic systems related to mobile equipment
  • Good knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems related to mobile equipment
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of design for six sigma principles
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of lean principles
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of scrum development methodologies
  • Strong skills in ECAD system and good skills in 3D MCAD systems, CATIA V5 experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of assembly processes and good understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Strong background in working in a project based product development environment and process
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organization and time management skills


  • Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering highly desirable.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering is required 
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience in electrical, controls and mechatronic design 
  • Experience with truck-tractor or mobile equipment designed highly desirable. 
  • Licensed PE or ability to obtain PE license preferred.
